The earliest form of 枨 isn’t found in oracle bones — it emerged later, during the Warring States period, as a variant of 橙 (chénɡ, tangerine tree), borrowing its phonetic component 成 (chéng). But scribes needed a distinct character for the architectural term, so they replaced the original ‘tree’ radical 木 with… well, still 木 — because yes, door posts were literally made of wood! The left side 木 anchors its material essence, while the right side 成 (chéng) provides both sound and a subtle semantic nudge: 成 means ‘to complete, to accomplish’, hinting that this post *completes* the door frame — turning an opening into a proper, dignified entrance.
By the Han dynasty, 枨 was firmly established in technical texts on carpentry and palace construction. In the Yingzao Fashi (1103 CE, the Song dynasty’s architectural manual), 枨 appears in diagrams labeling vertical supports beside doors and windows. Poets like Du Fu and Li Shangyin used it sparingly but precisely — always evoking stillness and symmetry. Its shape never simplified dramatically; even today, those eight strokes preserve the balance: four on the left (wood radical), four on the right (成), mirroring the bilateral harmony of a well-built gate.
