By the Warring States period, the figure evolved into 卢, a phonetic element borrowed from 炉 (furnace), emphasizing the hearth’s centrality. The seal script standardized the roof’s broad sweep and simplified the lower part into today’s 卢 — seven clean strokes: three for the roof (点、横、撇), four for the body (竖、横折、横、竖).
This humble shelter became culturally charged: in the Han dynasty, 庐 denoted frontier guard posts; later, during the Tang and Song, it appeared in elite poetry as a symbol of cultivated withdrawal — Wang Wei’s ‘empty mountain’ poems often imply such quiet dwellings.
