The earliest form of 扆 appears in bronze inscriptions from the Western Zhou (c. 1046–771 BCE) — not as a full pictograph, but as a simplified ideograph combining 户 (hù, 'door') on the left and 伊 (yī, a phonetic loan, later stylized into 巾 + 尹) on the right. The left side 户 wasn’t literal — it signaled a ‘threshold space’, hinting at a boundary object near an entrance or seat. Over centuries, the right component evolved: oracle bone forms showed a draped cloth held by a hand (尹), gradually simplifying into today’s 巾 (cloth) above 尹 (to govern), reinforcing the idea of a controlled, ceremonial textile barrier.
By the Han dynasty, 扆 was firmly established in texts like the *Book of Rites* (《礼记》) as the screen placed ‘behind the ruler’s seat’ — not for hiding, but for grounding his symbolic center. Its visual structure tells the story: 户 anchors it in architectural space, while the upper part suggests a draped fabric (巾) under authoritative control (尹). Even its pronunciation yǐ echoes 伊, an ancient demonstrative meaning ‘that one’, implying specificity — *that* screen, *the* one behind the throne. No wonder it never became colloquial: it was born for ritual precision, not everyday use.
Think of 扆 (yǐ) as the quiet, elegant cousin of 屏 (píng) — both mean 'screen', but 扆 is far more literary, historical, and spatially specific.
