Carved onto oracle bones 3,200 years ago, the original pictograph was a full, rounded 心 — a stylized heart with ventricles and chambers, sometimes even with dripping blood or a pulse line. As writing moved to bronze inscriptions, scribes streamlined it: the bottom curve sharpened, the top flattened. By the small seal script era, the heart had tilted leftward and shed its lower mass — becoming a compact, vertical cluster: two dots (representing vital essence or spirit-eyes) hovering over a gentle downward curve (the heart’s contraction). Stroke by stroke, it transformed from a detailed organ into a minimalist emotional glyph — three strokes, zero clutter, maximum resonance.
This radical didn’t just shrink — it *specialized*. While 心 remained the full word for 'heart', 忄 became the silent emotional signature attached to verbs and nouns describing inner states. In the Shuōwén Jiězì (121 CE), Xu Shen explicitly defined it as 'the mind’s vessel', linking thought and feeling as inseparable.
