The earliest form of 庳 appears in bronze inscriptions as a compound pictograph: a broad roof radical (广) sheltering a simplified figure (卑) — originally depicting a kneeling person with bent arms, signifying humility and lowered status. Over time, the kneeling figure evolved into the modern 婢 component (though unrelated to 'maidservant'), while the roof radical 广 retained its role as the semantic anchor for 'building' or 'shelter'. By the Small Seal Script era, the 11-stroke structure stabilized: 广 + 卑, with the horizontal stroke of 卑 extending leftward to suggest roof overhang, reinforcing the idea of a building deliberately kept low.
This visual logic shaped its meaning: a dwelling whose height expresses deference — to nature, to elders, or to cosmic order. In the Zuo Zhuan, 庳 appears describing border fortifications built low to blend with terrain; in Tang poetry, Du Fu uses 庳室 to contrast his cramped study with imperial palaces — not complaining, but affirming moral elevation through spatial humility. Even today, architects restoring Ming-dynasty courtyards cite 庳 as a design principle: low eaves, shaded corridors, rooms that bow, not boast.
