Crucially, 孱 itself is a layered character: two 尸 (shī, 'corpse' radical, here suggesting 'collapsed posture') stacked over 子 (zǐ, 'child'), evoking a trembling, diminished person. So 僝 literally 'depicts a person who is weak' — but paradoxically, it came to mean 'to make someone weak through verbal assault', i.e., to wear them down with abuse.
